History rarely erases things completely. It only moves them somewhere we can no longer see.

This piece was born from two stories: the vanished empire of Byzantium, and Amphitrite, the sea queen of Greek myth.

On the last night of Byzantium, a ship carried the final bloodline of a thousand-year dynasty across a dark sea, Ottoman forces closing in behind it. Constantinople had already fallen. By morning, an empire had vanished from the map — and survived only as legend.

This is where Vouti began to wonder something else. Did it really disappear completely? An empire can fall. But could something it carried still remain — hidden inside something, somewhere? What if it was the sea queen herself who found it?

That night, something slipped from the fleeing ship into the waves. A crown. It left human hands and sank into the dark, never to surface again — at least, not in any record we have.

But the sea had a witness. It was Amphitrite who came, drawn by the light sinking past her. She didn't know what it was. But she recognized what it carried — the last breath of a vanishing civilization. What humans chose to forget, she chose to remember.

She never returned it to land. Instead, she planted it at the heart of her kingdom. In depths no hand could reach, the crown slowly became something else — diamonds gathering in layers like coral, the pavé carving itself into a dome the way currents shape stone. For centuries, Amphitrite guarded it — so that an empire would not disappear completely.

Byzantium fell. But the last light it carried grew again, in the hands of the sea queen who kept it.

Byzanthea was reborn — carrying the name of an empire nearly forgotten, and the goddess who refused to let it go.
